Below are the steps and information needed to acquire a contractor license in Georgia.

The original law passed in the 2004 session. The revised bill passed in the 2005 session.

Decide on a necessary license. (See O.C.G.A. 43-41-2 for complete definitions)

  • Residential-Basic Contractor (contractor work relative to detached one-family and two-family residences and one-family townhouses not over three stories in height)
  • Residential-Light Commercial Contractor (same as residential-basic, and additionally, such contractor work or activity related to multifamily and multiuse light commercial buildings and structures)
  • General Contractor (contractor services unlimited as to type of work contracted for, undertaken to perform, bid or proposed upon or otherwise offered to perform, and performed as a contractor, except any work which falls under the licensing requirements of Chapter 14 of this title, which may not be performed by the general contractor unless he or she possess licensure to do such)

    Decide if you are eligible for an exam exemption.

  • Applications and necessary documentation for being exempt from the exam must be recieved at the Georgia Secretary of State's Office by Dec. 31, 2006.
  • The exam exemption is for those seeking to be exempt based on appropriate experience, which the state has defined as three successful Georgia project over the five years prior to the application; 10 successful Georgia projects over the 10 years prior to the application; evidence of being engaged in the industry in a supervisory or management capacity for seven of the 10 years prior to the application.
  • If seeking exemption from the exam because of holding a similar license from a different state or territory that has reciprocal agreement with the state's contractor licensing board, the application and proofs must be submitted starting Jan. 1, 2007.

    Complete form and necessary affidavits and make certain it is mailed prior to deadline. Do not forget check and sign all necessary documents. Dec. 31, 2006 is the deadline for applications seeking exemption from the exam.
